The Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. It is one of the most unique and bio-diverse bodies of water on the planet. Every year during monsoon season, which occurs between May and October, the river changes directions and the Lake expands across the lower plains and deepens from 1 meter to 10 meters. This is an amazing natural phenomenon which is what makes this body of water so special.
NGO2 has worked with floating communities along the Tonle Sap to raise awareness and problem solve the issue of plastic to protect the biodiversity of the Lake. Most of these villages have little to no infrastructure and lack of knowledge of the effects burning plastic or throwing plastic into the Lake creates. The organization in cooperation with local Government, sponsors and International assistance has provided support in on-going clean up events, Festivals, educational workshops and potential problem solving to rid plastic from the Lake as well as from the communities as a whole.
Some of the villages or Sangkats where NGO2 has had a presence are: Siem Reap River, Chong Kneas, Kampong Khleang, Kampong Phluk and Mechrey. There are future plans to include additional villages along the North half of the Tonle Sap in these programs.
